Complete on Time
Despite negative weather impacts and area forest fires, both sites were able to open to the public within the timelines laid out in the project plans.

Skilled Architecture
To minimize environmental impact, John Clark Architect Inc. utilized site materials and natural resources, such as incorporating trees milled on-site into project finishes and landscaping.

Premium Design
Both locations were designed to highlight their natural features: forest verticality, rocky geology, a sloping prairie, and expansive sky.
Commitment to Sustainability
Little Flower Monastery at Carmel Hill and Mount Carmel Spirituality Centre were design-built to a LEED Silver equivalent, master planned and managed by John Clark Architect Inc. Primary construction materials incorporated into both retreat centers feature prefabricated Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) on concrete foundation. CLT is a ‘growing green’ alternative to conventional construction. CLT’s high strength-to-weight ratio reduces reliance on structural concrete, enabling year-round construction activities that significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
To the extent possible, site materials and natural resources were utilized — such as milling trees on-site for project finishes and landscaping.
Building mechanical systems incorporate biomass wood-chip boilers for domestic and perimeter hot water heating. The overall structural design takes advantage of natural air current flows, minimizing the need for air conditioning. Overall, the building technology is simple, eco-friendly, durable, and economical. Wood chip hoppers need to be loaded only every few weeks, enabling the boiler to operate continuously without requiring any carbon-based fuels. There is also an intention to harvest wood chips from Mount Carmel Spirituality Centre’s 30-acre site to fuel the biomass boilers.
